Quadratic Funding
In December 2018, in their paper ‘Liberal Radicalism: A Flexible Design For Philanthropic Matching Funds’ Vitalik Buterin, Zoe Hitzig, and E Glen Weyl put forward an innovative model called Quadratic Funding, which could form the basis of a new general purpose infrastructure for the funding of public goods. In principle the model incentivizes individuals to voluntarily contribute amounts that together signal to a government how much society as a whole values a public good, how much should be spent on it, and where that funding should be directed. Vitalik’s Cryptograph is his hand drawn representation of this groundbreaking Quadratic Funding formula.
Vitalik Buterin
“Boy Genius” and “Wunderkind” are just some of the terms that have been used to describe Vitalik Buterin, the 26 year old Russian-Canadian mathematician, writer and programmer who co-founded Ethereum and Bitcoin Magazine. Vitalik was born in Kolomna, Russia and stayed there until he was 6 before moving with his parents to Toronto, Canada. In 2011 he co-founded Bitcoin Magazine with Mihai Alisie and then he went on to invent and publish the Ethereum White Paper in 2013. He and the other Ethereum co-founders then launched the Ethereum mainnet on July 30 in 2015. He has an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel and a Thiel Fellowship and he is one of the most influential voices in the cryptocurrency and blockchain world.
